From 20–24 September, the 11th edition of the International Workshop on Surface Physics (IWSP) took place in Wojcieszyce, near Jelenia Góra, Poland. The workshop was organized by the Institute of Experimental Physics at the University of Wrocław.
During the conference, dedicated to the latest developments in surface physics, we presented two research topics:
- An analysis of oxidation dynamics for group IV transition metal dichalcogenides
- On-surface metalation of salophene molecules with Dy on Au(111) substrate: A combined STM/STS and DFT study
An interesting part of this year’s IWSP was a series of workshops aimed at students and young researchers. Going beyond research itself, the workshops focused on two particularly important skills: writing grant proposals and effectively presenting scientific results.
The workshop Beyond the project: Idea vs. Reality, led by Prof. Franciszek Krok from Jagiellonian University, focused on turning a research idea into a well-structured research project. The second workshop, Effective Presentation Strategies, led by Prof. Grzegorz Greczyński from Linköping University, focused on building a coherent scientific narrative, improving the clarity of presentations, and effectively communicating scientific data.
Both sessions had a highly practical and interactive character. Following short lectures and discussions with the experts, participants worked in groups to analyse examples of good and bad practices in preparing scientific presentations and grant proposals. The ideas developed during the group work were then discussed together, creating an opportunity to exchange experiences and perspectives among the participants.
Our participation in IWSP 2026 was therefore an opportunity not only to present our research, but also to gain new experience and develop skills useful for our future scientific work.
