Professor Ulrich is the Deputy Director at the Institute for Applied Materials (KIT) and leads the Department of Composite and Thin Films. His primary research interests include thin-film deposition processes, plasma-surface interactions, and the design of functional coatings. His work involves various physical vapor deposition (PVD) and plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition (PACVD) techniques, particularly in the development of protective coatings and materials for lithium-ion batteries.

He is the author of over 150 publications and holds 46 patents.
